Assignment 6A - Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends

Assignment 6A – Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends

1.     Economic Trend: Structural unemployment has increased

b.     I think an opportunity in this situation exists because people are always on the lookout for jobs that match what they studied in college suit their skillset, which results in acquiring a part-time or temporary job that does not match their skillset or studies.

c.      The prototypical customers are unemployed people, specifically those who may have just graduated from college, and people who are looking to find better jobs that suit them better.

d.     I think it is relatively hard to exploit this opportunity because, although it does pose a need, the rate at which certain jobs are needed more than others or less than others cannot be accurately predicted or control by people. In addition, new jobs can be created, but it doesn’t mean that those jobs match the education and skillset of the workers who are looking for jobs.

e.      I believe I saw this opportunity because I always hear stories about how people are always struggling to find a job in the career fields they had always been interested in but are unable to.

2.     Economic Trend: Higher housing prices

b.     I think an opportunity exists here because homebuyers are always looking for more information about current housings costs, and that means they would be looking to experts for advice on buying a house.

c.      The prototypical customers are people who are looking to buy a home instead of renting one, most likely couples who have been married or are looking to get married.

d.     I think this opportunity can be hard to exploit because different regions in the U.S. have different housing costs and different jumps or dips in costs in the real estate market. Information may be easy to obtain and use in the short run, but predictions on the future of the real estate market may or may not be accurate.

e.      I believe I saw this opportunity because housing is applicable to everyone living in the United States, whether or not an individual is renting or buying. In addition, because of higher housing prices, it makes it more difficult for younger people to buy a house, and they would become less willing to do so because of rising prices.

3.     Regulatory Change: Background Check Expansion Act

b.     I think an opportunity exists here because, even though this hasn’t been passed, there has been growing concern over the number of shootings in the United States, causing people to fear for their safety when going to big events or even just walking around the neighborhood or a place where people normally socialize, like a mall or movie theater.

c.      The prototypical customers are people who already own or are looking to buy a gun. Though, people who aren’t gun owners and have no intention to guy a gun of their own could also be considered customers as this act also affects them indirectly by screening potential gun owners who may or may not be qualified to own a firearm.

d.     I think this opportunity can be hard to exploit because of the debate around the use of firearms and background checks in order to get them. Even if this gets passed, there will be individuals who would be reluctant to do a background check and may search for other means to get a firearm.

e.      I believe I saw an opportunity because of the rising number of shootings in the U.S. and the big debate around firearms in general.

4.     Regulatory Change: Supporting the goal of increasing public school teacher pay and public education funding

b.     I think there is an opportunity because there have been teachers going on strike for higher pay and education funding, so it is at least a clear want for those who work in the school system.

c.      The prototypical customers would be the teachers who are going on strike for higher pay and the students who are being affected by decisions being made about public education funding.

d.     I think this opportunity can be hard to exploit mainly because I believe most of the opportunities that could be taken from this situation is mainly up to the government and the action it takes in regards to teachers’ pay and public education funding. I don’t think it’s full of opportunities that a single company or individual can take advantage of since the school system is very reliant on the government.

e.      I believe I saw an opportunity in this because school funding and teachers’ wages have always been reoccurring issues full of debate and there is a lot of dissatisfaction among teachers about how much they’re being paid as well as the quality of education that students are receiving in public schools.

  1. Hey Kaitlyn,

I really liked how you included a-e bullet points. It really organized your blog and provided a unique and needed structure for the amount of information that was needed. I like your first point of about the structural unemployment increasing and could tie into my regulatory changed point about jobs becoming more mechanistic. Over all great job on this assignment!

  2. Hi Kaitlyn!
I enjoyed reading this post because of how organized it is and also because of how descriptive you were with each point! The story on background checks caught my eye most because I believe something needs to be done as soon as possible to deal with the rising number of shootings in our country. Overall I think you did very well on this assignment!
