Assignment 5A- Identifying Local Opportunities

b.     Story description: In this article, written on November 2, 2018, the author is explaining how the Len Mattiace Foundation has raised money to raise awareness about the issue of cyberbullying and educating kids on the dangers and consequences of it.
c.      Description of problem: The main issue is raising awareness of the dangers of bullying and most especially cyberbullying to kids and teenagers who live in an age where it is easier to do so through current technology. They are unaware of what may happen to those who get bullied or are cyberbullied, innocent victims who don’t know how to handle the bullying.
d.     Description of who has the problem: The people who have this problem are the people who lack awareness of the dangers of cyberbullying, who are kids and teenagers as they are most familiar of technology such as computers and cellphones and use them the most.

b.     Story description: This article, written on October 20, 2018, is about the poor quality of the drinking-water infrastructure in Texas. The water-infrastructure is described to be “on the verge of collapse” as they are old, rusty, and made of clay. In addition, the infrastructure lacks funding and proper maintenance.
c.      Description of problem: The water infrastructure in Texas, which includes both drinking-water infrastructure and sewage, is of poor quality and is at risk of bursting and collapsing, and is need of major improvements to prevent further damage and risk of breakage.
d.     Description of who has the problem: There are multiple groups of people who have this problem, the first being the people of Texas who live with the old water-infrastructure and are most at risk since they are closest to old and damaged pipes. Another group of people with this problem are those who are seeking to upgrade the water-infrastructure in Texas, but need the money in order to do so.

3.     Area resident experiences problem with office’s hours by a staff writer of the Jacksonville Daily Progress (TX)

b.     Story description: This article, written on January 18, 2019, is a first-person account of someone who has a big issue with the people who work at the Jacksonville Driver’s License Office, as they do not always follow the schedule posted on the door of the office.
c.      Description of problem: The workers of the Jacksonville Driver’s License office do not always follow the schedule of office hours, inconveniencing those who have to go the Driver’s License Office in order to take care of driver’s license needs and other needs in a timely manner.
d.     Description of who has the problem: The people who have this problem are those who have to visit the Jacksonville Driver’s License Office and find that there is no one working at the location despite the office hours posted on the door saying otherwise, as they are unable to get their needs satisfied when they most need it.

4.     Volunteers pack soup kits on MLK Day by Ernest Rollins of Herald Times (Bloomington, IN)

b.     Story description: This article, written on January 21, 2019, talks about how volunteers at the Community Kitchen of Monroe County bagged 800 pounds of food for the nonprofit organization, Backpack Buddies Program. The bags of food were distributed to 400 elementary school students for their families’ weekend meals.
c.      Description of problem: The problem this article introduces is the problem that young students and their families are unable to get food that would properly sustain and nourish them. There are people in need who aren’t able to properly feed themselves because of financial issues or others.
d.     Description of who has the problem: The people who have this problem are families who are financially unstable and are thus unable to buy food to feed and nourish themselves.

b.     Story description: This article, written on November 21, 2018, addresses the issue of the dangers of driving around holiday time, where traffic gets worse, people on the road are more likely to get distracted by phones, be inebriated behind the wheel, and people are more likely to be reckless drivers while driving home.
c.      Description of problem: It is unsafe for people around the holidays to drive on the road because of the increased number of drunk drivers, tired drivers, speeders, other motorists, and those distracted by cellular devices.
d.     Description of who has the problem: Everyone who has to drive home during the holidays are the people who have the problem, more specifically those who are responsible for being behind the wheel.

  1. Hi Kaitlyn!

    I am very impressed with your assignment as it shows stories outside of Florida as well as being very specific stories. A specific point I found impressive was how you took articles that didn't flat out say the problem but rather found the problem within the article. For example, volunteers who pass food packs out are a good thing and we are glad we have those people to do so but there is also a problem of hunger there. Overall, I think you did really well!

    I really enjoyed reading the stories you chose, especially because they were all very different from each other. I also found it impressive how detailed your descriptions of the problem and who had them were. I think it is crucial for people to know about the prevalence of cyberbullying and there is definitely an opportunity to increase awareness. Overall, great job!!
